Is alpaca wool itchy?

Fine alpaca rarely itches. What makes any wool itch is thick fibers that poke the skin, not the animal it comes from. Baby grade alpaca (20.1–23 microns) and finer feels soft to most people, and alpaca has no lanolin, the wax in sheep's wool that some people react to. Coarser alpaca and some blends can still itch, so check the grade and the fiber content. Of the 4,360 alpaca clothes we track, 67% state a baby grade or finer.
Why some wool itches
A micron is one thousandth of a millimeter. Thin fibers bend when they touch your skin, so they feel soft. Thick fibers push back, and that prickle is what people call itch.
Most people find fibers finer than about 23 microns comfortable next to the skin. Above roughly 30 microns, most people feel a prickle. See the full scale in alpaca grades explained.
Why alpaca usually itches less
- Fine grades. Baby alpaca is Peru's 20.1–23 micron class, in the comfortable range for most people.
- No lanolin. Alpaca has none of the wax in sheep's wool that some people react to.
- Grade matters more than the name. “Alpaca” alone says nothing about fineness: a coarse grade can still prickle.
